Introduction

It's time once again for AnandTech's Memory and Motherboard price guide.

The basic goal is to provide you with the best deals, and follow price trends of the listed products. We have selected a leading team of on-line vendors, and will be tracking their progress on weekly basis. Please note that all vendors were selected according to their best price offered. Some vendors may ask that you place a phone-order to make sure that you receive our listed price; others simply ask that you mention where you found the price (in this case AnandTech). We have tried to eliminate vendors with low feedback rating, but we do encourage you to do some research before purchasing any product from this list.

If you encounter any problems with a vendor on our list, please email us, and we will take appropriate action. Remember that we will only list vendors with positive customer feedback. If you have any suggestions, don't hesitate to let us know.

Also be sure to check out AnandTech's Hot Deals Forum for even more great memory, motherboard, CPU, video card and other technology buys.

This Week

Last time our memory price guide had some modest drops here and there but this things have changed quite a bit. Overall, prices have fallen for almost every module of memory that we list in our guide. We've never seen such a singular drop in prices across the board but there's a first time for everything and some drops are quite significant thus if you're looking for memory now is definitely the time to buy.

Things have been slow in the motherboard market since our last guide as prices have remained steady or dropped slightly, overall nothing very significant. This week we've added i850 motherboards supporting the Intel Pentium 4 processor which should be interesting to watch in the coming months as motherboard manufacturers continue to produce more solutions for this platform. In addition, we've added the Iwill KA266 motherboard to our Socket A DDR motherboard list which is based on the ALi Magik 1 chipset. Though not much has changed with motherboard pricing you can still find a great i815E or KT133(A) motherboard for a very competitive price.

Regardless of what memory type you're in the market for you'll definitely find a great price right now. As aforementioned earlier, prices have fallen for almost all of the memory modules that we list with some significant price drops with several types. Note that PC2100 256MB DDR SDRAM memory has fallen $106, a huge drop making DDR SDRAM more affordable than ever. As we have seen in the past RDRAM continues its downward fall in price making it more affordable and we will probably continue to see such drops as the P4 becomes more saturated in the marketplace.

Virtual channel memory has remained the same in price although most other PC133 and PC100 modules continue their descent in price.

Last week we saw that PC133 some PC133 modules shoot up in price but that's not the case this week as both PC133 and PC100 (CAS2 and CAS3) are all on the fall. If you'll notice almost every single PC133 and PC100 module has fallen in price, some more than others but nonetheless you can easily find great memory for excellent prices right now. Hopefully we will continue to see such drops in the future but as of now we cannot stress enough that now is the time to buy if you're in the market.

Not much has stirred in the i815E department since our last motherboard price guide as you can see with i815E prices holding their ground except for a few motherboards dropping slightly in price. As with our previous guides we still recommend the ASUS CUSL2 simply because of it's rock solid stability and top notch performance.

The Transcend TS-ASL3 is a good buy if you're looking for a basic 815 motherboard and it has come down very nicely in price which makes it an even better buy for the budget minded since you get overclocking features, stability, and performance for $101.

i815EP motherboards have also remained steady except for the ASUS CUSL2-C which has dropped slightly in price making it an even better buy for those of you looking for solid performing, stable, and overclockable Socket 370 solution.

New for this week are some Pentium 4 motherboards which are based on the i850 chipset requiring RDRAM. While RDRAM is still dropping in price the combination of a P4, an i850 motherboard, and RDRAM can be quiet expensive for the budget-minded. In addition, the performance of the P4 does not compare significantly to other CPUs, namely the P3 and the AMD Athlon/Duron therefore it is possible to find a much better performing system for a fraction of the cost of a P4-based system.

If you are looking for a good Pentium 4 board however, the ASUS P4T has been running quite well in our labs for the past few weeks.

Socket-A Motherboards have not changed much in price at all, KT133A's are still quite popular however with DDR SDRAM coming down in price the AMD 760 based boards may become a more attractive option.

The Iwill KA266 makes its debut on the Price Guide this week however we would recommend against purchasing it just yet as Iwill is going to be producing an even newer revision of the board which we will be taking a look at in the next few weeks.
